- Dearborn Hills Golf CourseDearborn Hills was built in 1922-23 by the late Robert Herndon, prominent local developer and benefactor. It is reputed to be Michigan's oldest public golf course and is listed in the State Register of Historic Sites. Mr. Herndon operated the 83-acre course until his death in April, 1986. His widow, Marjorie Herndon, donated the property in his memory in June, 1987. The city continued operation of the course until the summer of 1991 when it closed to undergo a major renovation and expansion. Financing for the project came to $750,000 in State grants and $3.9 million in construction bonds to be retired with revenue from the course. Under the watchful eye of noted golf architect Warner Bowen, the designer of Schuss Mountain and Benona Shores, the flat terrain was reshaped into rolling, challenging par four holes and beautiful par threes. The effort to preserve and enhance valued wetlands has produced 16 ponds which will provide cleaner, more diversified habitat for wildlife. Robert Herndon's Dearborn Hills Golf Course, already rated as one of the top five public golf courses in Michigan, added a majestic, first-class clubhouse in November, 1995. This Dearborn jewel, a 7,000-square-foot, traditionally styled brick building features a spectacular view of the 1st and 10th tees. The clubhouse includes a grill, bar, banquet facilities, pro shop with snack bar and an outdoor patio with tables and chairs. The perfect place to relax after a round of golf.
