- The News-Herald NewspapersThe News-Herald Newspapers has been the “Voice of the Downriver” area for well over a century. The tri-weekly publication publishes on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The newspaper serves a wide range of communities and a huge suburban region. March 3, 2006 The News-Herald added a Friday Edition, it marks the first time the company has added another edition to its weekly fare since August 1990, when Heritage Sunday was first introduced. That product is now known as the Sunday News-Herald. The Friday newspaper will be an entertainment-based vehicle that also offers news, commentary, classifieds and sports, all to serve its readership Downriver. Subscribe today! Give us your opinion! The current News-Herald format was established under the Heritage Newspapers’ brand in 1986, when the late industrialist Heinz Prechter brought the old News-Herald (based in Wyandotte) and Mellus Newspapers (based in Lincoln Park) from SEM Newspapers Inc. and combined them into a single Downriver publication each Wednesday. Heritage Sunday, today called The News-Herald Sunday, was added in the early 1990s. The News-Herald’s history dates back to the 1870s, when the Rev. George W. Owen established it. The Mellus Newspapers started in the 1920s, subsequently flourished for decades under famous publisher/editor William Mellus. Today’s News-Herald dominates the Downriver Detroit marketplace, with its readership surpassing the total combined circulation of the Detroit News and Free Press in the same area. Since 1990, the newspaper has been awarded the Michigan Press Association’s “Best Newspaper of the Year” honor every single year – the only newspaper in any circulation category to be so honored. It has also been honored nationally throughout the 1990s, by the Suburban Newspapers of America and by The Inland Press Association. Circulation Area : Allen Park, Brownstown, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron Twp., Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge, Riverview, Rockwood, Romulus, Southgate, Taylor, Trenton, Woodhaven and Wyandotte on Wednesday; additional communities for Sunday edition include Dearborn, Dearborn Hts. and Warrendale.
