The international relations strategy will create the blueprint for actions and positions in regard to global matters. The strategy also will create a platform for the City of Detroit and Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick in terms of attracting new residents and businesses, development, and communications regarding the city internationally.

- Windsor-Detroit International Freedom FestivalInternational River Days, a five day festival along the International Riverfront marked the 2007 opening of the River Walk along the east river leading up to the Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival fireworks. With about 3.5 million visitors, Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario jointly celebrate the multi-day festival the last week of June in order to commemorate each country's respective National holiday - (US Independence Day on July 4 and Canada Day on July 1). The International Freedom Festival began in 1959. It is organized by the Parade Company, a not-for-profit organization governed by the Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation. It has a long list of sponsors. The celebration draws large crowds of around a million people.

- Japan America Society of Greater Detroit and WindsorThe Japan America Society was established as a non-profit 501 c (3) corporation in 1989. Lee Iacocca of Chrysler Corporation was the Society's first officer, he was joined by Roger Smith of General Motors and Harold Poling of Ford and Mr. Nabuto of Mazda. Ninety leaders of American and Japanese companies then formed the Board of Directors. The Society's members represent local American, Japanese and Canadian manufacturers, R&D operations, trading companies, transportation companies, major banks, utilities, accounting and law firms. This Japan America Society of Greater Detroit and Windsor is part of a network of 38 Japan-America Societies across the country. Taken together, these Societies represent more than 25,000 people.
