As the Chief Executive Officer of one of America's wealthiest and most successful counties, Patterson oversees a workforce of 4,400 employees and controls an annual budget of more than a half billion dollars. Patterson attended the University of Detroit and the University of Detroit Law School, where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1967. During his brief hiatus from public service, Patterson entered private law practice. In 1990, Lawyers Weekly selected him as one of the top 20 attorneys in the state of Michigan.

He and Carol, who reside in Lake Jackson, Texas, are the proud parents of five children and have 17 grandchildren.
