- Lewis & MundayLewis & Munday was founded in 1972 by three African-American lawyers - recent graduates of Harvard Law School, Yale Law School and the University of Michigan Law School. It was a barrier-breaking institution. Its goal was to take on traditional corporate civil work and public law, something denied African Americans in the past. The timing was good. Detroit’s newly elected African-American mayor, Coleman Young, asked the firm to do municipal bond work. Four years later, the firm had become the first African-American owned firm to be listed in the “The Bond Buyer’s Municipal Marketplace.” In 2001, Thompson Financial Company, a nationally recognized bond counsel ranking entity, ranked Lewis & Munday 16th nationally among all bond counsel. The firm rendered opinions as bond counsel on over $3.35 billion of municipal securities. In the same year, Thompson Financial ranked Lewis & Munday 20th nationally among all underwriters' counsel firms in the country. The firm rendered opinions as underwriters' counsel on over $2.22 billion of municipal securities. The firm has been consistently ranked in the top 50 bond counsel firms since 1990. Among the top five rankings for the year-end 2006, Lewis & Munday was ranked 1st as Bond Counsel in the State of Michigan; 2nd in Connecticut and 2nd in Washington, D.C. by The Bond Buyer.
